During his high school years, Pete Rose started playing football and baseball. However, he didn’t have good academic grades and this saw him get held back after his sophomore year. After graduating from high school, his uncle helped him sign his first baseball contract. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur baseball player.
Pete Rose’s Career Growth and Success
Pete Rose found his debut in baseball in 1953. The debut came when one regular of the Cincinnati Reds got a groin injury. The opening saw Pete step-up and he soon earned the nickname “Charlie Hustle” which came after he sprint to first base despite drawing a walk.
However, his major league debut came in 1963 wen his team played against Pittsburgh Pirates. Late in the same year, that’s when Pete started enjoying his first hit. He ended that season with an average of 273.
Following the end of the season, Pete joined the United States Army Reserves, which gave him the opportunity to play in Reds games. It was until 1965 that Pete started creating a firm foundation in his career.
His excellent performance earned him a place in the 1970 All-Star game. In the 70s, Pete and the Reds went on to become among the most successful teams in MLB history thanks to their performance. Pete then signed a $3.2 million contract in 1979 as a free agent with Philadelphia Phillies. He even moved to the position of first base and helped the team win a World Series.
